Is the anuran most widely distributed Palaearctic, as dwelleth all from North Africa (Morocco) and Europe to the Arctic Circle, above 65 °, and to the northwest of Russia, although its eastern boundary is not well known , as in Asia and Japan there are several closely allied species, previously described as subspecies of Bufo bufo. Inhabits continental Europe, Britain and some islands in the Channel and Jersey; Sicily, but not on other islands such as Ireland and other Mediterranean (Corsica, Sardinia, Balearics, Malta, Crete, etc.)..
occupies the Iberian Peninsula, but it is not in the Balearics or the Canaries. In Portugal has a virtually continuous distribution.
occupies the peninsula in all types of habitats, from deciduous or coniferous forests to open areas or scrub, naturally or cultivated or disturbed environments or urban and gardens and parks. The only requirement for their presence seems their breeding sites have standing water or slow, preferably permanent and vegetation. That can be found in reservoirs, rivers, streams still pools, ponds and glacial lakes. Where it coexists with Bufo calamita, breeds in water bodies deeper and more permanent.
