Twenty long-finned pilot whales died and 11 others were rescued after being stranded on Bruny Island, south of the Australian state of Tasmania, reported Friday responsible for the environment.
The whales were stranded on Thursday and were spotted by a boat, who alerted the authorities. Quickly, rescue teams traveled to Butlers Beach tirelessly to spray water to the animals to save their lives.
During the early hours of Friday, rescuers managed to return the water to 11 animals.
"Once survived, 21 died. Many of them had already died when they were discovered," said the spokesman for the Department of Primary Industries, Rosemary Wales.
This source said that since there are no access roads to the beach, leave the bodies of animals decompose.
The whale stranding occurs frequently in Tasmania, but scientists have not yet managed to find out why.
However, Wales said that "pilot whales are social animals and if one makes a mistake and placed in shallow water, the rest will follow."
